The printer works fine but neither Simple Scan nor Xsane recognise the scanner. I have spent hours in forums, followed numerous instructions but I just can't get the scanner to work.

It worked OK with Ubuntu but I remember having the same problem and had to scout around a lot before I could get it to work. Problem is, I can't remember where I found the right instructions! I've downloaded and installed the drivers from the Epson website and I'm in the scanner group.

If anyone had the same problem, and solved it, please let me know how you did it. Hello Melvyn Gattinoni, welcome to LQ, often it's a problem with the permissions. If you are facing hardware issues with the latest version of Linux Mint and you are unable to solve them, you can always try an earlier release.

If that one works better for you, you can stick to it, or you can use it to install Linux Mint and then upgrade to the newer release.

The idea is that having this question on a Pixma printer I have found that many people that have the proper drivers different depending on the model of printer-scanner, but called 'scangearmp' for such an integrated scanner are trying to use it with Simple Scan or Xsane without success.

If one has the Canon scanner drivers installed, that means that in most cases a scanning application called ScanGear is already installed. That can be started by opening a terminal and doing scangearmp. In some cases it's scangearmp2. Just wanted to note, that for my Canon scanner, upon installing the drivers, only a scangearmp2 application is installed, which looks nothing like the ScanGearMP screenshots from the accepted answer:.

EDIT: It turns out for these versions of the drivers scangearmp And then simple-scan connects fine to it, and I scan dpi into a PNG, so all is good for me :. The current ScanGear application provided with the drivers sudo scangearmp2 command is useful because it can select, find and configure devices. It doesn't provide a solution but helped me work out that this problem is not caused by Simple Scan failing to detect the scanner.

With this problem, the device isn't available to SANE so it can't be used by the Xsane and Simple Scan front-end graphical user interfaces. Sometimes a scanner will be supported by a sane backend that isn't enabled by default. Enabling it can often make things work. Sign up to join this community. So, other tools like Simple Scan or Xsane are not needed. ScanGear can save as png, pdf and pnm formats. It has advanced settings too. Just wanted to note, that for my Canon scanner, upon installing the drivers, only a scangearmp2 application is installed, which looks nothing like the ScanGearMP screenshots from the accepted answer: Upon clicking Version, this is displayed: The worst thing about this, is that I get no "raw" image - I only get JPEG and JPEG is embedded into the PDF toowith all the loss in quality and blockyness that entails.

So: other tools like Simple Scan or Xsane are not needed. If the result is different from what you expected, first make sure your scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer. No SCSI scanners found.
